MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Classes might not be in session for the spring for another two weeks, but Blue Raider athletics continues to ramp up its winter season here in Murfreesboro, starting with the return of the Blue Raider Radio Network's basketball coaches' shows, featuring Men's Basketball Coach Nick McDevitt and Women's Basketball Coach Rick Insell.
Rick Insell Live and Nick McDevitt Live will originate from The Boulevard on Middle Tennessee Boulevard beginning tonight, Jan. 3. There will be no show Jan. 10 due to the college football national championship game, but the shows return for seven consecutive weeks beginning Jan. 17 with the final show slated for Feb. 28.
Rick Insell Live, hosted by Dick Palmer, runs from 6 to 7 p.m. and airs on WGNS (100.5 FM, 101.9 FM, and 1450 AM).
Nick McDevitt Live, hosted by Chip Walters, airs from 7 to 8 p.m., on WGNS, as well as ESPN 94.9 FM and 95.1 FM.
Both shows also will be streamed on the Varsity Network App.
Blue Raider fans are encouraged to attend the shows, and fans can also submit questions for both shows via email at radio@goblueraiders.com.
Women's Basketball set for Home Openers after 1-1 Weekend in Texas
Lady Raider fans will have their first opportunity of 2022 to watch some C-USA basketball on Thursday, when Middle Tennessee takes on Rice at 6 p.m. in the Murphy Center. The 5-3 Owls will be playing in their first C-USA game of the season, while MT will be looking to bounce back after dropping a game to UTEP by one point in the back half of their opening C-USA weekend in Texas. Middle Tennessee will also play North Texas at home this weekend, with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. this Saturday in the Murphy Center.
The Lady Raiders dominated UTSA in their first game back from Christmas break, blitzing the Roadrunners 85-56 behind a career-high 31 points from Courtney Whitson. MT forced UTSA into 25 turnovers, scoring 24 points off those turnovers while holding the Roadrunners to just 34.5 percent shooting from the field.
Saturday's game in El Paso saw MT take a tough loss at UTEP, 57-56. The Lady Raiders struggled offensively, shooting just 32.8 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from beyond the arc, while giving up 21 free throw attempts to the Miners, who drained 17 of those attempts to pace their own offensive output. Dor Saar and Jalynn Gregory led the team in scoring, with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Men's Basketball recharges for first C-USA Road Trip after COVID pause
On the other side of the Murphy Center, positive COVID tests throughout the men's basketball program forced the team's scheduled conference home openers against UTSA and UTEP to be postponed over the past weekend. But, now healthy and raring to get back in action, the Blue Raiders are ramping up in practice ahead of their own road trip to Texas this coming weekend.
MT will take on Rice on Thursday and North Texas on Saturday, mirroring the women's team schedule, as is the practice in C-USA this season. North Texas dominated the Owls 75-43 in both team's conference openers on New Year's Day. The Blue Raiders will look to bounce back after dropping their final non-conference game to Chattanooga just before the winter holidays.
The men's team will be back at home on January 13, when they take on FAU at 6 p.m. in the Murphy Center.
