SAN DIEGO – Middle Tennessee Softball (0-3) had a tough go on Friday as the Blue Raiders fell in a 4-0 battle against the Boise State Broncos (3-0) in game three of the SDSU Season Kickoff at SDSU Softball Stadium.
Freshman Laura Mealer batted in the six-spot and went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate on a pair of singles today for the Blue Raiders, in addition to recording a stolen base. Junior Makenzie Hutchinson had a great day as well, hitting 2-for-3 in the three-spot.
Freshman Claire Woods started in the circle for the Blue Raiders pitching 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while also recording her first career strikeout. Senior Gretchen Mead closed out the game, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing only five hits.
Woods tallied her first career strikeout with the first pitcher she faced in the bottom of the first, catching the Bronco looking.
Mealer looked to get things going for the Blue Raiders in the top of the second, connecting on a two-out single to the shortstop and got into scoring position after stealing second, but was left stranded to end the inning.
The Broncos struck first in the bottom of the second as Boise State knocked a solo home run to left center to take an early 1-0 lead.
Boise State added three more in the bottom of the third. The Broncos' leadoff batter connected on a solo home run over the center-field wall to extend their lead to two. Boise State added two more off a one-out single to extend the deficit to four.
In the top of the fourth, Hutchinson reached on a one-out single, but a 6-4-3 double play would end the inning for the Blue Raiders.
Mealer tallied her second hit of the contest in the top of the fifth as she connected on a one-out single, but another Bronco double play closed out the inning.
Looking to rally in the seventh, Hutchinson led the Blue Raiders off with a leadoff single up the middle, but a strikeout and Boise State's third double play of the day sealed the game.
