MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill announced today the hiring of former Blue Raider running back Shane Tucker as the programs wide receiver coach. Stockstill also made numerous position adjustments to his coaching staff.
Tucker, who played for Stockstill from 2013-17, returns to Murfreesboro after spending the 2021 season coaching running backs at Florida A&M. In his lone season, Tucker coached Boxtorow All-American Bishop Bonnett who ranked 17th nationally in rushing with 993 yards and five touchdowns. He was also 13th nationally in yards per carry at 6.37.
"I am excited to have Shane as part of our staff," said Stockstill. "He was an excellent player here and loves this program and university. Shane brings great energy and enthusiasm, and will do a tremendous job in recruiting."
Tucker joined the Rattlers after spending the Spring 2021 season at Austin Peay as the tight ends coach.
Tucker began his coaching career at Dodge City Community College as an assistant strength and conditioning coach specializing in speed development for the running backs, wide receivers, linebackers, and defensive backs. Tucker was promoted to the wide receivers coach in 2019. After one season in Kansas, Tucker returned to his alma mater, where he joined the MTSU staff as an offensive graduate assistant for Stockstill.
While an athlete, Tucker received several honors while playing four different positions. He lined up at running back, wide receiver, tight end, and kick returner. Over four years, he racked up 1,162 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry. He also had 67 catches for 869 yards and seven touchdowns through the air. In 2014, Tucker received honorable mention All-Conference USA honors at running back. In 2015 he was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list for the best running back in the country.
After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, he was in the Buffalo Bills' NFL training camp.
Tucker is a native of Memphis, Tenn. He received his BA in Leisure, Sports & Tourism studies from Middle Tennessee State University.
STOCKSTILL MAKES ADJUSTMENTS TO STAFF
Stockstill also announced some staff changes and adjusted responsibilities with the completion of the staff.
"I have studied the NFL and other colleges a great deal with how they structure their staffs," said Stockstill. "I was intrigued with how some were positioning their staffs and I thought this would be beneficial to our program and our players."
Offensively, Mitch Stewart will be the offensive coordinator with no designated position to coach while Mike Polly will serve as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator. Brent Stockstill will move to coaching the quarterbacks and being the passing game coordinator, while Rick Mallory will handle the tight ends and H-Backs. Jeff Beckles will remain as the running backs coach and newily hired Shane Tucker will take over as the wide receivers coach.
Defensively, Scott Shafer is set to being his sixth year as defensive coordinator and safeties coach, while Tommy West will handle the defensive line for the ninth straight year. Kenneth Gilstrap remains as the cornerbacks coach but will add special team's coordinator to his duties and Dustin Royston will handle the linebackers and remain as the recruiting coordinator.
