Caudill, Smith finish the day in the top 10
BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Middle Tennessee finished the first day of South Dakota State's Jackrabbit Invitational in third place at 581 (+5) Monday. After leading through one round, Middle Tennessee lost ground to Rutgers (577) and South Dakota State (578), which carded two of the three under-par team rounds of the day in the second round.
"We had a really good start, and I am proud of the team for hanging in tough all the way to the end," head coach Chris Adams said. "It's always a long and tough day to play 36 holes and stay mentally focused. Everyone contributed and made a lot of birdies and, for the most part, eliminated big numbers, and that is why we're in contention with 18 holes to play. Looking forward to a great day tomorrow."
Caroline Caudill and Madison Smith lead the Blue Raiders through two rounds at 145 (+1), ending the day tied for eighth place. Caudill started the event with a 70 (-2) to tie for the lead through 18 holes. Smith carded just her second even-par round of the season in the second round to move into the top 10.
As a team, Middle Tennessee is tied for the lead with 32 birdies through two rounds. Caudill's eight birdies on the day tied for the second-most in the field. She also recorded one of the eight eagles on the day, going 2-under on the par 5 11th hole.
Mollie Bebelaar carded a 72 of her own in the second round to end the day tied for 13th at 146 (+2). She carded birdies on three of her first seven holes on the way to her first par-or-better round since September 26.
Sophie Burks finished play tie for 17th at 147. She started the day with a 72 (E), ending the first round in a tie for fourth. Her score of 2-under on par 3 holes was tied for the best in the field through two rounds.
Catherine Caudill rounded out the Blue Raider lineup in a tie for 20th at 148 (+4). Playing as individuals, Abbie Lee and Taylor Edlin tied for 53rd at 157 (+13).
The Jackrabbit Invitational concludes Tuesday with the third round. Play starts at 10 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
