Blue Raiders Fall to Southern Miss on Senior Day
5/21/2022 4:41:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee baseball was shut out for the second straight game on Saturday, dropping its final regular season game of the 2022 season 10-0 to Southern Miss at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Blue Raiders (29-24, 17-13 C-USA) struggled at the plate, only managing three hits on the afternoon, while USM scored in five of the game's nine frames. The Golden Eagles (41-14, 23-7 C-USA) had four extra base hits and walked six times on Saturday, posing a constant scoring threat in addition to their sharp pitching.
"That was the best staff we saw all year," head coach Jim Toman said of USM's pitchers. "They have, by far, the least walks in the league and, by far, the least strikeouts. That's a Top 10 staff in the country, and they showed that this weekend. They were every bit as good as advertised."
Brian Dillingham's third inning single was the only Blue Raider hit for much of the afternoon, until Fausto Lopez and Jackson Galloway smacked singles of their own in the sixth and seventh innings respectively. Dating back to Thursday's game, MT has not scored in 22 consecutive innings, getting shut out in the past two games and failing to score in the final four innings of Thursday's 9-4 loss to USM.
James Sells pitched well early, but earned the loss after giving up three runs in the top of the fifth inning before making way for Jalen Wirtz. Jacob Wright finished the game on the hill for MT.
Prior to the start of the game, MT honored nine seniors: eight players and one student manager. Athletic Director Chris Massaro and Toman welcomed the families of Brian Dillingham, Fausto Lopez, Trent Seibert, Nathan Sanders, Zach Keenan, Brycen Thomas, Mason Speirs, Peyton Wigginton and Chandler Todd to the field for a pre-game ceremony.
"Them guys, they mean the world to me," Toman said. "They work hard and they're good kids. They're good teammates. Usually, you don't stick in a program that long unless you're a good guy."
Middle Tennessee will be the No. 6 seed in next week's Conference USA Tournament. The Blue Raiders await further word from the conference office at the conclusion of today's games to find out their opponent as the No. 3 seed after tiebreakers break a three-way tie for third. They also await their start time for their first game next Wednesday in Hattiesburg, Miss.
"We won seven series out of 10 in the fifth best conference in the country," Toman said. "We've qualified for the conference tournament two years in a row, which hasn't been done in a long time. They're down right now, but they've got to realize that we've had a heck of a year and it's not over yet."
