The Blue Raiders (25-20, 14-10 C-USA) clinched the series and won their sixth straight Sunday game after a 15-hit performance. James Sells gave MT another strong outing on the mound as he pitched 6.1 innings, struck out four and allowed two earned runs. Sells did not allow a hit until the top of the fourth inning.
Leading 2-0, Sells gave up his first run in the fourth but pitched around trouble in the fourth and fifth to keep FIU in check. A one-out single by Briggs Rutter started a four-run, six hit inning that featured two RBI singles and a Mason Speirs two-run home run to put the Blue Raiders up 6-1.
After a Luke Vinson leadoff walk in the seventh, back-to-back singles by Jacob Williams and Tatsunori Negishi scored Vinson and made it 7-1. Eston Snider was hit by a pitch and Brett Coker followed by driving in both Williams and Negishi on an RBI single. Coker scored on JT Mabry's ninth hit of the series as the Blue Raiders were in control, leading 11-1.
FIU scored three in the seventh and one in the eighth but MT's lead was too large for the Panthers to overcome. Peyton Wigginton pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to conclude the win and the weekend.
Coker and Speirs each drove in three runs on two hits. Jackson Galloway singled twice in three at-bats. Brian Dillingham added a double and single as 11 different Blue Raiders recorded at least one hit.
The Blue Raiders have won four of their last five and are set to host Tennessee Tech Tuesday at 6 p.m. After the midweek matchup, MT will travel to Rice May 13-15.
