Blue Raiders fall in series finale at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Middle Tennessee Softball (19-34, 6-18 C-USA) came up short once more on Sunday as the Blue Raiders fell 7-0 in their series finale against the WKU Hilltoppers (35-11, 17-7 C-USA).
WKU loaded the bases in the first, but the Blue Raider defense was able to get out of the jam and keep things scoreless after one. However, after the Blue Raiders stranded runners on the corners with Rodriguez left 60 feet away from scoring, the Hilltoppers struck first.
WKU's Jordan Ridge connected on a leadoff home run over the center field wall to push across the first run. Abby Newman got aboard off a single, before Brylee Hage knocked an RBI-triple down the right-field line to plate Newman and push the Hilltopper lead to two after two, 2-0.
In the third, WKU's Bailey Curry drew a walk, before a hit by pitch put two Hilltoppers on base. Randi Drinnon the connected on an RBI-single to plate WKU's third run of the contest. Senior Kailey Ahlstrom recorded her second strikeout of the day, but then WKU's Newman knocked a two-RBI double into right-center to bring across a pair of Hilltoppers and push WKU's lead to five after three, 5-0.
WKU added to their lead again in the fifth. After a leadoff walk, a wild pitched moved the Hilltopper baserunner to second. Then WKU's Hage doubled down the left-field line to put Hilltoppers on third and second. Taylor Davis then singled to third base and Richetto held the lead Hilltopper on third but couldn't beat the baserunner to first as WKU loaded the bases on the hit. Maddie Bowlds then connected on a one-out two-RBI single up the middle to bring two more across for the Hilltoppers and push the lead to seven, 7-0, which eventually proved to be the final.
Senior Lani Rodriguez and junior Kaylee Richetto helped to lead the Blue Raiders in the contest, going 2-for-3. Sophomore Amaya Harris also recorded a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 against the Hilltoppers. Freshman Ava Tepe went 1-for-3 in the contest, while junior Kelci Hill and freshmen Anyce Harvey and Laura Mealer each knocked a hit on the day going 1-for-3 against WKU.
The Blue Raiders season comes to an end at 19-34 and 6-18 in C-USA play.
