Benin, Nigeria – Two Blue Raiders competed at the Nigerian-national Trials this weekend, preparing for a chance to head back to Oregon for the World Championships. Both Alaba Akintola and Esther Isa went on to prove why they are the best from their nation.
Junior Alaba Akintola ran a lot this weekend as Nigeria kept pushing to have their 4x100 meter team crack the top-16 in the nation ahead of the qualification deadline. Moments after running his third 4x100 in the last 24 hours, Akintola went on to run a 20.51 second 200-meter dash that earned him his first senior national title.
The Ondo, Nigeria native also raced well in the men's 100 meter, eventually taking the national runner-up spot with a time of 10.06 seconds in the final. In the men's 4x100, Akintola helped push the team to a 38.34-second time that earned them the final qualifying spot ahead of the deadline's end.
Graduate student Esther Isa reached great heights, tying for first place with a mark of 1.88 meters. The national title-winning mark ties her second-best career jump from last year's Nigerian trials. Isa also earned bronze in the women's triple jump with a mark of 13.14 meters.
Across the pond, Blue Raider alum, Abigail Kwarteng, competed at the Jamaican-national trials and finished with the highest jump of 1.90 meters but was not eligible to win due to being from Ghana.
Blue Raiders that have qualified for the World Championships will be announced by the end of the month.
