Only baseball player to have number retired
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Former Middle Tennessee baseball standout Danny Moore has passed away following his long and courageous battle with cancer.
Visitation with the family will be at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road location, in Lexington, Ky., on Sunday, July 17 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. (EDT), and on Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (EDT), with the funeral to follow.
Moore, 67, was an outstanding centerfielder who excelled at the plate, on the bases and in the field when he starred for the Blue Raiders during the 1976 and 1977 seasons.
Moore is the only Blue Raider baseball player to have his number (2) retired and one of just two baseball numbers in program history to be retired. He was inducted into the Blue Raider Hall of Fame in 2009.
Moore posted a .351 career batting average and was a table setter at the top of Coach John Stanford's lineup. At the completion of his career, Moore owned the single-season stolen base record with 26 in 1976, and he was also the career stolen base leader with 37. Moore's 26 stolen bases in 1976 still stands as the fourth most in a single season by a Blue Raider, and his career mark stood until 1987 when it was broken by Eddie Pye with 41.
Moore helped lead Middle Tennessee baseball to its first NCAA Regional berth in 1976 when the Blue Raiders played in the Tallahassee, Fla., South Regional, after winning the Ohio Valley Conference with a 35-17 record.
Moore was named All-Ohio Valley Conference in both 1976 and 1977.
