Blue Raiders Ride Swan, Offense to Blowout Win over St. Bonaventure
2/25/2023 8:45:00 PM | Baseball
RHP Eriq Swan was efficient in his six-frame outing for his first win of the season as the Raiders cruised to runs in all but one inning after the second to move to 5-2 on the season.
Offensively, DJ Wright's three-run home run in the fifth highlighted the Blue Raider bat barrage, and the first baseman would tack on a two-run double in the eighth to finish with five RBI.
It was a fitting part three after MTSU swept Friday's doubleheader and sets up a series finale between the Raiders and the Atlantic 10 Conference program.
By the Numbers
2: Two hitters had perfect days at the plate. In addition to Wright's 5-5 afternoon, Jered Vetetoe, making his left field debut, went 3-3 with a trio of walks drawn.
6: Swan faced some early trouble but had a successful outing, going six innings with seven strikeouts, no walks and four hits allowed.
3: RHP Patrick Johnson had a three-inning save, surrendering no runs and just two baserunners while striking out a pair of batters.
8: Eight Blue Raiders crossed the plate in Saturday's win.
9: Nine Blue Raiders recorded a hit and an additional two reached base on a free pass.
The Skipper Speaks
"It was a good day all the way around," said Blue Raider head coach Jerry Meyers. "We had an opportunity to get a couple of guys in there that we hadn't previously. Swan was good on the mound and found the zone well. I'm pleased with some of our at bats throughout the whole game and we played very good defense again. That's what we're looking for.
Player Perspective – RHP Eriq Swan
"The biggest difference [between this start and last start] was just throwing strikes, making sure I command the zone and pounding guys in and out. The slider was huge today, we worked on it this week and made sure it was in a good spot. It got me out of a lot today," said Swan.
Blue Raider Notes
In going 2-3 with three RBI, Jeremiah Boyd has hit in each of MTSU's seven games so far in 2023.
Wright follows with a five-game hitting streak. OF Eston Snider meanwhile now carries a five-game on-base streak.
Jacob Williams and Gino Avros made their season debuts. For Avros—a graduate transfer from Austin Peay—it was his first MTSU appearance. The Clarksville native would double in the eighth inning for his first Blue Raider hit.
In three games across two days, the Blue Raiders have used just six total pitchers.
Up Next
The teams will square off for the weekend series finale Sunday at 12:00 p.m., with MTSU seeking a series sweep. The game will be carried on ESPN+ and the Blue Raider Radio Network.
