MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The NCAA Division I men's tennis subcommittee announced on Tuesday the field for the 2023 NCAA Individuals Championship that take place from May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
"I'm excited for Stijn to make the NCAA singles championship, said MTSU Head Coach Jimmy Borendame. "This is retribution after being the top alternate last year and being so close but not earning a birth. He has been playing well and I'm excited to see him perform in Orlando."
Graduate Student Stijn Slump will represent Middle Tennessee in the singles portion of the NCAA Tournament.
The field consists of 64 singles players with 12 automatic bids and 52 at-large from across the country.
Slump, who is ranked No. 61 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, received the automatic bid for Conference USA. Automatic bids are earned by being the highest rated individual in each conference.
Last season, Slump was named an alternate in the tournament.
This will be the second time under Coach Borendame that a player will compete in singles at the NCAA Championship as Francisco Rocha played in 2021.
The last time a MTSU player advanced pass the first round of the singles tournament was in 2003.
