OKLAHOMA CITY – Today, Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) and Jim Thorpe Association released the prestigious Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List and Middle Tennessee's Tra Fluellen and Teldrick Ross were among the 35 honorees. The list of the nation's best defensive backs represents 10 conferences and one independent university.
Fluellen, a safety out of Gilmer, Tex., was a second team All-CUSA pick by PFF College last season. The senior led the team with 104 tackles to go with 4.0 TFLs, two interceptions and eight pass breakups. He is also a member of the 2023 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List.
Ross is entering his redshirt senior season and has now accumulated two preseason watch list appearances, including The Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. The Macon, Ga. product was a second team all-conference pick last year after registering a career-best 77 tackles to go with 3.0 TFLs, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a school record 20 pass breakups.
The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee whose members compile a list of up to 50 players based on previous performance in NCAA Division I college football and preseason All-America lists. This list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons may be added to the semifinalists and finalists lists as the season progresses.
