This marks her seventh career weekly accolade and second of the season
DALLAS – Following a pair of career milestones and strong performances against UTEP and NM State, Middle Tennessee guard Savannah Wheeler was named the Conference USA Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Wheeler, a graduate from Catlettsburg, Kentucky picked up her seventh career weekly accolade and second of the season – she was previously named Player of the Week four times and Freshman of the Week twice.
The preseason CUSA Player of the Year became just the 10th player in CUSA history to eclipse 2,000 career points during the Lady Raiders' 81-70 win over the Miners, and the CUSA all-time leader in career made free throws (579) in Middle Tennessee's 85-48 rout of the Aggies. The graduate logged a league-high 48 points on the week and went 20-of-23 (86.9 percent) from the free throw line.
She tallied a team-high 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists against UTEP, where she went 5-of-9 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. After the Miners cut the Lady Raiders' lead to single figures, Wheeler tallied nine points in less than five minutes and made four free throws to close out the game. Wheeler followed that performance up with 30 points, five assists, three boards and a pair of steals in a dominant win against NM State, where she went 8-of-12 from the field and 13-of-14 from the charity stripe in just 30 minutes of action. This marked her second 30-point performance of the season.
Wheeler is averaging 16.2 points a game and currently leads the league in Assists Per Game (4.3) and Assist/Turnover Ratio (1.8). She also ranks third in Free Throw Percentage (.843).
