MTSU fall to Sam Houston in first CUSA match of the season
HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS — Middle Tennessee volleyball came up short in their first Conference USA match of the season at Sam Houston. The Blue Raiders took the first set of the match, winning 25-22, but could not capitalize on their early lead and dropped the next three sets. The scores of the sets were as follows: 25-22, 17-25, 23-25 and 21-25.
The Blue Raider's (4-9, 0-1) record when having a lower hitting percentage than their opponent falls to 1-7. That stat resembled how the match went, with MTSU having a higher hitting percentage than Sam Houston (6-6, 1-0) in set one, but failed to repeat that success in the following sets. The Blue Raiders record when having a hitting percentage under .250 falls to 0-8. Middle Tennessee volleyball failed to reach the .250 mark in any of the four sets.
Offensively, the Blue Raiders were led by junior Adriana Rhoda and graduate student Kiera Booth. Rhoda led the squad with 19 kills and Booth was right behind her with 15. They were the only Blue Raiders to reach double-digit kills. Defensively, freshman Emma Nilson led the pack with five blocks. It is her fifth time reaching five or more blocks this season. Setter Andi Spies recorded 40 assists, making it the sixth time she has reached that mark in her freshman season. It is her 10th time reaching 30 or more.
