MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee (5-4, 0-0 CUSA) was unable to overcome the hot shooting of the Belmont Bruins (9-1, 0-0 MVC) in a 83-62 loss on Sunday afternoon.
Belmont shot the ball well midway through the first half, going 8-for-13 from the field, but Middle Tennessee was able to play the Bruins to a 17-17 stalemate through the first 10 minutes thanks in large part to starting the game 5-of-6 from the free throw line and six points in the paint on dunks from Torey Alston, Sean Smith and a Chris Loofe putback.
The Bruins shooting numbers helped them maintain a slim 35-31 lead at the break. Middle Tennessee's Jahvin Carter nailed three three-pointers in the half to give him nine points and forward Torey Alston had nine points with four rebounds and two steals. Chris Loofe grabbed a team-high five rebounds and had five points. Middle Tennessee swiped five steals and scored nine points off turnovers.
Belmont hit 8-of-10 shots from the 15:00 minute mark down to the 9:29 minute mark of the second half to go on a run that helped them finish it out. The Bruins finished the game shooting 52% from the field as a team as compared to 31% for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee was led by Alston, who finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. McDevitt's Mic
"In modern college basketball, you have to be able to score," said Middle Tennessee Head Coach Nick McDevitt. "There are so many other teams that can score the ball and we just couldn't throw it in the ocean. A lot of times when you have rough shooting nights, you can go back and count a dozen or so bad shots. I didn't think we had a ton of bad shots. We had quality looks, we just couldn't make them."
