Akers named CUSA Player of the Week

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- Redshirt freshman utility player Layne Akers was named Conference USA Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday, March 30. This is the first CUSA weekly award of the season for Middle Tennessee baseball, and the first of Akers' career.
Akers had an outstanding week at the plate, driving in 11 RBI while slashing .471/.500/.765 across four games for the Blue Raiders with three extra base hits. The Murfreesboro native's week was capped off with his first career grand slam in the first inning of Sunday's 9-6 win over NM State, clinching Middle Tennessee's first series sweep of the season.
The utility player also notched a career high in the batter's box twice this week, setting and tying his career-high with three hits in each of the final two games against the Aggies. Akers went 3-for-5 with three RBI in Saturday's 8-7 win, while matching the mark with a 3-for-4 day on Sunday.

Middle Tennessee will finish off a four-game homestand with a midweek contest against Southern Indiana on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m., with Blue Raider baseball hosting another $2 Tuesday.
