Former CUSA Standout and Miami Guard signs with Middle Tennessee
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Former Conference USA standout and Miami guard, Mya Kone, has signed with the Middle Tennessee women's basketball team, head coach Matt Insell announced Thursday afternoon.
"Mya is a versatile player who can play multiple positions on the floor with her size and length," Insell said. "She has great scoring ability and can put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways—at the rim, on pull-up jumpers, and from three. She has proven she can be an elite player in this league, and we're excited she wants to return to Conference USA and join the Middle Tennessee women's basketball family. There's no doubt in my mind she'll pick up where she left off and make an immediate impact for us."
Kone, a 6-foot-2 guard from Pompano Beach, Florida, comes to Murfreesboro following collegiate stops at Miami, FIU, and James Madison. In her career, she has appeared in 56 games with 12 starts, averaging 7.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 37.4 percent from the field and 75.7 percent from the free throw line.
She was named the Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year for the 2024–25 season. During her 2023–24 campaign at FIU, Kone played in 33 games, making 11 starts, and averaged 11.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. She earned First Team All-CUSA honors and was named the league's Sixth Player of the Year. She scored in double figures in 21 games and recorded nine double-doubles on the season.
Kone delivered a career-best performance with 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-9 from three-point range, and went a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line while adding 11 rebounds in a win over Jacksonville State on Jan. 6, 2024.
At Blanche Ely High School, she was a McDonald's All-American Game nominee and helped lead her team to a 6A State Championship in 2020.
Kone becomes the first transfer portal commitment for the Blue Raiders this season, joining a signing class that already includes ESPN Top 75 recruit Aaliyah Blanchard and Tennessee native McLyane Bobo. Middle Tennessee also returns a strong core for the 2026–27 season, led by reigning Conference USA Freshman of the Year Blair Baugus, along with standout guards Kirston Verhulst and Carsyn Swaney. Gracie Hamby and Stanislava Kabernick bring proven production and versatility, while Jenna McClendon, Nicole Dominguez, and Nora Ahamadi add size, skill, and depth heading into the new season.
