It is essential to work through licensed vendors approved by the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) to ensure the proper use and protection of Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) brand and trademarks. Licensed vendors adhere to the University’s branding guidelines, helping to maintain the integrity and consistency of MTSU’s logos and identity across all merchandise and promotional items. Additionally, when vendors use officially licensed logos, the University receives royalty payments that directly support MTSU programs and initiatives. This process not only safeguards the University’s reputation but also contributes to its ongoing success and visibility.
What is a Trademark?
A trademark (or mark) is any logo, symbol, nickname, letter(s), word, slogan, or derivative that can be associated with an organization, company, manufacturer, or institution and can be distinguished from those of other entities or competitors.
Who Needs a License?
Any individual, organization or company wishing to use the name or identifying marks of Middle Tennessee State University must obtain a license. This includes manufacturers or service providers who use MTSU's name or logo on products (including premiums for promotions) or in advertising.
What Types of Licenses Are Available?
We work with The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) to protect, manage and develop the WKU and WKU Athletics brand. The following licenses are available through CLC.
Internal Campus Supplier - The Internal Campus Supplier (ICS) Agreement allows a company to produce merchandise bearing WKU trademarks for university departments and related entities for internal consumption only. This license type is the most expeditious and least costly to pursue but there are strict limitations on distribution.
Local License - The Local License is for companies in the immediate in-state marketplace that do not plan distribution of their products. Local Licensees are permitted to sell product to WKU, retailers, and directly to consumers. This license type is the next easiest type to pursue, but the costs are higher than an ICS license and geographic restrictions do exist.
Standard License - The Standard License is intended for companies that are capable of extensive production and retail distribution of their product(s) and/or are introducing a unique and commercially viable product to the collegiate market. This is the most challenging and expensive type of license to pursue.
How to become a licensed vendor?Any vendor who wishes to obtain a license to produce Middle Tennessee State University merchandise must submit a license application. This application informs the university of how its marks will be used, what type of product the applicant makes, how Middle Tennessee State University is going to be represented, etc.
