Pugh has 3-1 mark at CCB Collegiate Invite
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The fall season for Middle Tennessee men's tennis came to a close as the Blue Raiders wrapped up the CCB Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Samford on clay courts at the Country Club of Birmingham.
MT sophomore Jacob Pugh dominated the No. 3 singles flight at the CCB Collegiate Invitational by winning three times in as many days. Pugh opened up the tournament with a three-set victory against UAB's Marlon Goering, followed by another win in three sets against Colin Hart of Eastern Kentucky. Samford's Austin Heinz fell to Pugh by a score of 6-3, 7-5 on the second day of competition.
Pugh's tournament ended on Sunday with one loss, as UAB's Giovani Pasini won over the Dacula, Georgia, native, 6-2, 6-4, on the final day of competition to preserve his undefeated tournament record.
"In the first match Jacob struggled a little bit to get used to the clay and how he needed to play on that surface, but he made some good adjustments and got some good wins this weekend," MT assistant coach Daniel Leitner said.
Tulane's Eric Wagner defeated Michael Apple in the opening round of the No. 2 singles flight by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Apple then took his consolation match against UAB's Fernando Vargas to three sets before dropping the third, 6-4.
Freshman Nicolas Buitrago Machado competed in the top singles flight in Birmingham over the weekend, falling to Samford's Justin Ghavami in an opening round shootout, 6-4, 7-5. The Bogota, Columbia, native dropped his second match of the event to Ramon van Flymen of EKU after forcing his second set into a tiebreaker.
In doubles action, Buitrago and Pugh combined for three victories on the weekend. The pair took down UAB's Pasini and Vargas, 7-6 (3), followed by a triumph over EKU's Hart and Romain Stoffels. Buitrago and Pugh also won over teammate Apple and EKU's Dan Lineberry, 6-1 on the final day of competition.
The Blue Raiders will now turn their focus to the spring dual match season, as MT hosts 10 matches at the Adams Tennis Complex, as well as the 2017 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship April 21-23.
"We want our guys to come back from this short offseason and be ready to compete in the spring season," Leitner added. "We saw last year at the Adams Tennis Center we had some great crowds. The team matches are very exciting, and there's always a good atmosphere. The stakes are even higher at the conference tournament, so we hope to have lots of people come out to our matches this spring to support the team.
