MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After starting the 2017 dual match season with two commanding wins over Chattanooga and TSU, Middle Tennessee men's tennis is set for a challenging weekend with matches against Vanderbilt and Penn.
"It was a short week, but the guys all know what's a stake with the matches coming up, so everyone was locked in and ready to be prepared for these two tough matches this weekend," MT assistant coach Daniel Leitner said.
The Blue Raiders will travel to Nashville for a match against the Commodores Friday afternoon at 2. Vanderbilt enters play on Friday with a 1-1 mark on the season, falling to No. 13 Northwestern by a score of 4-3 in the season-opener last weekend before sweeping Belmont, 4-0.
Vanderbilt's Daniel Valent boasted a 16-9 mark at the top spot in the singles lineup a year ago, and he returns for his junior season with the 'Dores. Valent is followed by Cameron Klinger, Baker Newman and Alex Ross as Commodores who spent much of their time in the singles lineup a season ago, when Vanderbilt fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Commodores played with 19 different doubles combinations last season, making it harder for opponents to earn the first point of the match against them.
"Doubles really hurt us a couple times last year," Leitner added. "We started off a couple matches playing from behind, and that helped us when we tried to emphasize the importance of doubles in practice. We're still working on getting the pairings comfortable with each other, while focusing on energy and attitude and making good decisions."
MT returns to the Adams Tennis Complex to host the Quakers Saturday at 1 p.m.
Penn will open their season at the ATC after having an 8-15 record a season ago, finishing fifth in the Ivy League. Sophomore Kyle Mautner led the Quakers in 2016 with an 11-11 record at the top spot in the singles lineup, followed by upperclassmen Josh Pompan and Matt Nardella, who spent time at No. 3 and 4 last season.
The Blue Raiders will be looking to even the all-time series against Penn after David Geatz's Quakers took the first meeting between the two programs last season in Philadelphia, 5-2.
"It's always great to play this tough competition," Leitner added. "This will be a good test for us early in the season, and this weekend should be a good indicator of where we're at."
Free food presented by Jason's Deli will be provided at the match vs. Penn at the ATC Saturday. Live stats for the match at Vanderbilt as well as the match at home against the Quakers will be available.
