MT vs. George Washington and Alabama A&M match notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis is set to play George Washington and Alabama A&M Saturday at the Adams Tennis Complex, with first serve at 1 p.m. against the Colonials.
"All of our guys learned a lot from the matches last weekend in terms of staying focused and competing hard," assistant coach Daniel Leitner said. "They've played enough tennis to know that not every close match is going to go their way."
After falling to Vanderbilt and Penn last weekend, focus quickly shifted towards facing the Colonials, who boasted a 14-9 record in 2016, including a 6-0 mark in conference play. George Washington has already claimed wins over Grand View and NIU this season, despite a 6-1 loss to Drake.
Leading the charge for the Colonials will be senior Julius Tverijonas, who's put up two wins in three matches so far this season at the top spot in the lineup. Chris Reynolds, Chris Fletcher and Dennis Afanasev hold down the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots in the singles lineup, respectively, where they all have a 2-1 record.
All three of George Washington's freshmen have seen time in the singles lineup early in the season. Colonials' head coach David Macpherson was hired in August 2016 after spending time as the coach for Bob and Mike Bryan, an American doubles team on the pro tour.
Alabama A&M's 2017 season will kick off in Murfreesboro on Saturday when they face the Blue Raiders at 5 p.m.
Nishangan Nadaraja returns to the top spot of the Bulldogs' singles lineup for his second season. He'll be joined in the lineup by sophomores Shakir Elvin, Armando Gray Jr. and Mateo A. Monroy Reuda. Head coach Willis Mbandi stayed in Huntsville to become the coach of his alma mater after his playing days.
Newk's has sponsored Saturday's matches by giving out free whoopie pies, while supplies last. There will also be a paper airplane competition, where gear will be given out to some fans.
"There are some prizes we'll give out to some fans this weekend, so I hope we'll have a big turnout," Leitner added. "It's always great to see the support we get every match."
As always, admission is free to all home tennis events, and live stats will be available during both matches.
