MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee head coach Jimmy Borendame will lead the Blue Raiders into Des Moines, Iowa, this weekend to face Drake at 10 a.m. on Sunday to begin a 10-match road swing.
"I think the road trips are always good for team chemistry," MT assistant coach Daniel Leitner said. "The guys spend a lot of time together and get to play in some tough environments, so that helps to build towards the rest of the season."
The match will be the first between the two programs, and it will be Borendame's first time squaring off against his former team, where he earned his first head coaching position, posting a record of 15-9 in 2009-10 before coming to Murfreesboro.
"This match will be a challenge, but when we put the schedule together, we wanted those challenging matches to give us a chance to improve and measure ourselves against quality competition," Leitner added. "The guys are looking forward to that, and they're excited for the opportunity to bounce back."
The Bulldogs enter play this weekend with a 4-2 mark on the young season, with wins coming against George Washington, 6-1; Northern Illinois, 4-0; Rice, 4-3; and Iowa, 4-3. Drake fell to No. 11 Texas by a score of 4-1 and recently fell to Purdue, 4-0.
Sophomore Vinny Gillespie currently sits at No. 78 in the ITA's singles rankings and leads the Bulldogs with a 4-0 record in dual match play at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Calum MacGeoch follows behind Gillespie at No. 2 in the Drake lineup, where he's posted a 3-2 mark so far this season. Gillespie and MacGeoch combined in doubles for a 2-4 dual match record, all at the No. 1 doubles position.
Tom Hands is the second Bulldog with an undefeated singles mark, with one win at the No. 4 spot and two more at No. 5. Hands has split time with Ben Clark and Barnaby Thorold as his doubles partner and is 2-2 overall in doubles, with all matches coming at the No. 3 spot.
Head coach Davidson Kozlowski led the Bulldogs to a final ranking of No. 49 last season with a record of 17-12 while playing 17 nationally ranked teams. This year's squad features four juniors, three sophomores, one freshman and no seniors.
Drake will provide live stats for the match on Sunday, and you can follow the Blue Raiders on social media to keep up with the results over the weekend.
