Middle Tennessee men's tennis head coach Jimmy Borendame announced the hiring of Sebastian Rey as assistant coach in mid-June 2017. Rey played four seasons at Tulane, helping the Green Wave climb to a national ranking of No. 30 at the end of his senior season.
In Rey's first season on staff with the Blue Raiders, MT posted a 22-5 record and saw its season end in the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship. Chris Edge, Tom Moonen, Gian Issa and Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore were all named to All-C-USA Second Team Singles, while Edge and Moonen were listed as First Team Doubles and Morell and Negre followed suit at Second Team Doubles. With Rey on the sidelines, MT finished the season with the best final ranking in the Borendame era, No. 43, and Edge and Moonen finished the season as the No. 76-ranked doubles combo. Issa also posted one of the best single seasons in the history of the program to cap off a legendary career in Rey's first year in Murfreesboro.
"Coach Borendame has done a great job with the program, and working alongside him will enable me to be a better coach," Rey said. "We have an exciting schedule, which gives us the opportunity to compete with some of the best teams in the country."
A Wantage, United Kingdom, native, Rey was 85-39 in singles play and had a record of 59-46 in doubles at Tulane. His list of accomplishments and recognition includes ITA Southern Region Senior Player of the Year, three-time LSWA First Team All-Louisiana, and Second Team All-Conference USA. Rey cracked the ITA singles rankings for the first time as a senior, reaching as high on the list as No. 110. He rounded out his career ranked No. 66 in the country in doubles.
"Playing at No. 2 or No. 3 for a top-30 program in Tulane gave me the opportunity to consistently compete with the best teams and players in the country," Rey added. "The experiences from playing these matches including the NCAA tournament will help me guide the team to success. Leading the team as captain in my senior year enabled me to get the best from my teammates."
Prior to his college career at Tulane, Rey attended Monkton Combe School in Oxford in the United Kingdom, where he was ranked in the top 10 in the British Junior rankings.
