Recently hired Steve Davis will be the Blue Raiders' new defensive coordinator, while also handling the secondary. Former Central Florida standout Darin Hinshaw will coach the running backs and Kevin Fouquier (pronounced Few-kway) will direct the linebackers. Offensive coordinator Larry Fedora, who spent the past two years coaching the running backs, will now take over the wide receivers.
"I am truly excited about the knowledge and enthusiasm these three additions bring to our staff," McCollum said. "All three have great reputations as top-notch recruiters throughout the country, which is very big to us at Middle Tennessee. They have a genuine care about our kids both on and off the playing field. I could not be happier than to have these guys a member of our family."
Davis, who has been a part of two undefeated regular seasons over the past six years, was most recently the defensive back coach for Southern Miss in 1999. A 1975 graduate of Livingston (now the University of West Alabama), Davis spent the 1999 season as the defensive backs coach for Southern Miss where he helped lead the Golden Eagles to a Conference USA and Liberty Bowl championship. Davis sat out the 2000 campaign due to family obligations, and while off the college sidelines he volunteered at Petal High School in Petal, MS and guided them to a 9-3 mark.
Hinshaw, a four-year starter for UCF at quarterback, spent the 2000 campaign as the quarterbacks coach for the Golden Knights making him the first person other than UCF head coach Mike Kruczek to coach the quarterbacks since 1985. In 1999, Hinshaw was a graduate assistant at UCF where he coached the tight ends and assisted with the quarterbacks.
As a player, Hinshaw set numerous school records for the Golden Knights, including the career passing mark with 9,000 yards. During his four years, UCF had a combined mark of 28-16. He later had a short stint playing with the Cleveland Browns and the arena leagues Orlando Predators.
Fouquier makes his way to Murfreesboro after spending the 2000 season as the defensive coordinator for Central Arkansas. The former Louisiana-Lafayette player has also had coaching stints at Louisiana Tech (1995-99), Sam Houston State (1993-95), Texas A&M (1991-93), Tuerlings High School (spring of 1991), Texas El-Paso (1990-91) and Louisiana-Lafayette (1989-90).
This will not be the first time Fouquier has been on a staff with McCollum. While at UTEP in 1990 and 1991, Fouquier was a graduate assistant working with the wide receivers and McCollum was the Miners' linebackers and special team's coach.
The new additions, along with the rest of the staff, will get spring practice underway on March 7 in preparation for the 2001 campaign.
