MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders and second-year head coach Scott Ginn open the home slate with a 1 p.m. match against Jacksonville State Saturday at Lady Raider Soccer Field after picking up the first win of the campaign with a 3-2 victory Wednesday at UT-Martin.
Freshman Danielle LaDuke scored the first and last goal, including the game-winner in the 90th minute, and fellow frosh Laura Miguez added a pair of assists as the Blue Raiders defeated UT-Martin, 3-2, in soccer action on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders held a 2-0 advantage early in the second half but watched it evaporate as the homestanding Skyhawks scored twice to tie the match. But MT continued to attack, outshooting UTM 24-6 in the match. Miguez made a run down the right side and deep into the 18-yard box, crossed the ball and LaDuke found the back of the net with 51.7 seconds remaining in the contest for the win.
Miguez fed LaDuke down the left side and the newcomer, playing in her first match because of injury, beat UTM goalie Caryn Schuefler with a left-footed shot in the 36th minute for a 1-0 Blue Raider advantage. Redshirt sophomore Megan McGregor added to the lead just over a minute into the second half with an unassisted goal for the 2-0 cushion. The Blue Raiders moved to 5-0 all-time against the Skyhawks.
Saturday's visitor, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, began their season with a pair of defeats at the Southeast Missouri Labor Day Tournament last weekend. JSU lost 1-0 to Ball State and 4-0 to host Southeast Missouri.
JSU and the Blue Raiders are tied 2-2 in the all-time series, with the Gamecocks winning 3-0 during the Jacksonville State Tournament late in the 1999 season in the last meeting between the two schools. MT picked up its first win of the 1998 campaign in a 3-2 victory over JSU and also tallied a 3-2 win during the 1997 season. The Gamecocks won the first meeting between the two schools in MT's inaugural season of 1996, taking a 2-0 victory.
MT travels to Appalachian State and East Tennessee next weekend on Friday and Sunday, respectively, before beginning a three-game homestand on Tuesday, September 25, with a 4 p.m. match against Murray State. The Blue Raiders will also begin conference play during the homestand with a September 28 match against defending Sun Belt Conference champion Florida International.
