MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee head coach Andy McCollum announced today the hiring of Steve Campbell as the program's offensive line coach and running game coordinator. Campbell, the head coach of Delta State University the past three years, was the 2000 Division II National Coach of the Year.
"I am extremely excited about what Steve (Campbell) brings to our program," McCollum said. "He will fit well into what we do and our philosophy. This position was my top priority and I think we got one of the top coaches in America. He has experience, is well thought of nationally, and will represent this University and program the right way. I plan on wearing him out the last two weeks of recruiting."
Campbell, who was the offensive line coach under former MT assistant Joe Wickline at SW Mississippi in 1996, served three seasons at the helm of the Statesmen football program leading DSU to the 2000 Gulf South Conference and the NCAA Division II National Championship with a 14-1 mark. He compiled a 27-8 overall record and a 20-7 mark in the GSC during his three years. Following the 2000 season, Campbell was named the Chevrolet, Frank Leahy and Don Hansen's Football Gazette National Coach of the Year.
Campbell's .771 winning percentage was among the best in school history and he left DSU ranked fifth among coaching victories and fourth in conference victories.
Campbell served three seasons, the final two as head coach, at Southwest Mississippi Community College before returning for his second stint at DSU. He was named head coach in 1997 after serving the 1996 season as offensive backfield coach at SMCC. During his two seasons as head coach, the Bears posted a record of 12-8. Southwest Mississippi Community College registered its first winning season in 12 years with a 7-3 record in 1998.
He began his coaching career in 1988 as a graduate assistant at Auburn University under Pat Dye. The Tigers claimed two Southeastern Conference championships and played in the 1989 Sugar Bowl and 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl games.
Campbell's first stop at Delta State was in 1990. He served two years as offensive line coach and one season as the offensive coordinator under Dr. Don Skelton.
Campbell left DSU after the 1992 season for Nicholls State University where he spent three seasons as offensive coordinator under his former Troy State head coach Rick Rhoades. Following the 1995 campaign, Campbell moved to Southwest Mississippi Community College. While at SMCC he coached three JUCO All-Americans and had 25 players sign with Division I schools over a two-year span. His offense led the MACJC in rushing yardage both years. Campbell served as the head coach of the South squad in the 1998 MACJC All-Star game, leading the South to a 13-12 victory.
He was a four-year starting center on the1984 and 1985 Southeastern Louisiana University teams, and on the 1986 and 1987 Troy State University teams. He was a member of the 1987 Troy State team that claimed the NCAA Division II National Football Championship with a 31-17 win over Portland State. Campbell was a First-Team All-Gulf South Conference selection that same season.
Campbell earned his BS degree in Economics from Troy State University in 1988 and his MBA in Marketing from Auburn University in 1990.
