Lady Raiders Drop Decision to Vandy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 62nd-ranked Middle Tennessee women's tennis team dropped a season-opening decision at eighth-ranked Vanderbilt Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Raiders (0-1) lost the doubles point to start the match, but played very well in defeat to the Commodores (3-0). The 29th-ranked tandem of Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell lost 8-2 to Vanderbilt's second-ranked Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos, while Jennifer Klaschka and Carien Venter lost to VU's Annie Menees and Ashley Schellhas, 8-6. Laura McNamara and Emily Vest dropped an 8-6 decision to Vandy's Korrin Scott and Audra Falk.
In singles action, 56th-ranked Kruse won the first set 7-6 (4), but could hang on against the 32nd-ranked Riske, who won the final two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Tsoubanos defeated Klaschka at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1, and Venter dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to No. 121 Kelly Schmandt.
At No. 4, Varnell played through an upset stomach and lost to Falk, 6-1, 6-0, while McNamara dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to No. 125 Schellhas. Vest lost 6-3, 6-2, to Menees at No. 6.
"We played well, especially in doubles," Lady Raider coach Randy Holden said. "This was a good tune-up for our team. It just came against one of the best teams in the nation."
The Lady Raiders open home action Sunday at Noon versus Virginia at the Racquet Club in Murfreesboro.
