Dell Takes Third, Thomas Fifth on First Day

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's Derek Dell was third in the 10000-meters and James Thomas placed fifth in the discus, leading the Blue Raider contingent during the first day of the Sun Belt Championships in Lafayette, La.
Dell finished the 25-lap race in 32:42.10, scoring seven points for the men's team, while Thomas was fifth in the discus with a mark of 158-4 for four points.
In other action senior Meaghan Byrd came in 11th in the discus with a mark of 107-10, while freshman Ashleigh Thaler just missed out on a place in the final event of the night, finishing ninth with a time of 40:40.51 in the 10000.
On Saturday Middle Tennessee will try to set up an opportunity to win another Sun Belt title for both the men and women with sprint preliminaries in the 100, 200 and 400-meters, as well as the high and intermediate hurdles. Field events on Saturday include the long jump and shot put for both the men and women, and the night concludes with the steeplechase.
