Peers guides Blue Raiders

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Junior John Peers won his first match of the season as the Blue Raiders opened weekend play against New Mexico.
Peers, ranked 105 in the ITA poll, defeated New Mexico's Carl Ho 7-5 6-4. In the opening week, Peers had one match unfinished and lost two matches to top tier teams before taking the win on Friday night.
As a team, Middle Tennessee fell 6-1 to No. 50 New Mexico but performed well overall. NM took the doubles point after winning No. 2 and 3 doubles by scores of 8-6. Peers teamed with junior Victor Melo taking an 8-6 win over Ho and Phil Anderson, which was their first doubles win of the spring.
Melo played well against NM's Ben Dunbar but fell in a super tiebreaker, 6-4, 1-6, 13-11.
Sophomore Richard Cowden lost the first set 6-3 to Jadon Phillips and played hard in the second set before Phillips pulled ahead for the 7-5 win. Sophomore Matthew Langley fell to Anderson 6-2, 6-2 while Conor Berg defeated senior Alex McCann 6-2, 7-5.
Freshman Shaun Waters performed well for the second straight match. Waters forced a tiebreaker in his first set with Joe Wood losing 7-6 (7-1) and Wood took the second set 6-2.
Middle Tennessee will play conference opponent Denver at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 in Albuquerque, N.M., on the campus of the University of New Mexico. Results will be posted on goblueraiders.com when they become available.
