Box Score (PDF)
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee secured a 1-0 victory over Florida Atlantic on a rain soaked Friday night to advance to 2-2-1 in Conference USA play and 5-6-2 overall.
The two teams went into halftime scoreless after a very evenly matched half as both teams had three shots on goal and a corner kick.
The rain picked up in the second half as play got more physical and both teams continued to battle for an advantage.
With 11 minutes remaining in the match freshman Peyton McCollum received a pass from Brianna Jasenak as she took a hard shot from 23 yards out. The shot ricocheted off the left post to score inside the right side netting to give the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead and eventually the victory. The goal was McCollum's first collegiate goal, while the assist by Jasenak was her first of the season and third of her career.
"Tonight we worked really hard and showed a lot of character and a lot grit," Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "We stuck it out despite some adversity with injuries. It was a good feeling to come together as a team."
The Blue Raiders faced a challenging final two minutes of the match as the Owls picked up the pressure and took four corner kicks in a two minute span. MT was able to hold off as Kelsey Brouwer collected four saves in her fourth shutout of the season.
Middle Tennessee and the Owls ended the game with 16 shots each as Tori Hawkins led the Blue Raiders with five shots, followed by McCollum with four in the game.
"I think the wet field slowed us down a little bit because we are a passing team but I think it also slowed FAU down because they play very similar," Rhoden said. "In the end I think we just really wanted to win this game and we were able to pull through."
The Blue Raiders return to the pitch on Sunday at noon to face FIU in their second-to-last home game of the season.
