MT clinches with UAB victory

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee secured a spot in the Conference USA Championship with its 1-0 victory over UAB on Sunday night.
The win on senior night sent the Blue Raiders to 5-3-1 in conference play and 8-7-2 overall.
MT and UAB were stuck at a scoreless draw heading into halftime as both teams recorded two shots on goal in the half.
Angie Lai broke the silence in the second half as Tori Hawkins sent a chipped cross to Lai as she head it over the Blazers goalkeeper and to the back of the net. The goal in the 52 minute was Lai's fourth of the season as she currently has the second-most goals for the Blue Raiders this season. The assist from Hawkins was her fifth assist of the season.
"UAB was a good opponent," Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "We talked about possessing the ball and I think you could tell we possessed better than we normally do. That created some more opportunities and it was good to see the result."
Kelsey Brouwer collected her seventh shutout of the season as Middle Tennessee notched a spot in the upcoming C-USA Championship in Charlotte, N.C. The shutout is Brouwer's 17th career shutout which ranks tied for first in MT program history. Brouwer grabbed three saves between the posts for the Blue Raiders.
"Our responsibility is to finish in this league as high as we can so we are going into Charlotte looking to represent ourselves and our university."
MT out-shot the Blazers 19-10 with eight of their shots on frame tonight.
The Blue Raiders close the regular season with a road game at Charlotte on Thursday, Oct. 30.
