MT upends Miami in home opener
Box Score (PDF)
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – When the Blue Raiders needed her the most, she came through in the clutch as junior transfer Brea Edwards hit a game-winning triple to help the Blue Raider women's basketball team (1-1) defeat Miami 53-48 in front of 3,806 at Murphy Center Monday.
Middle Tennessee (1-1) extended its home win streak to 12 games and improved to 8-2 in home openers under Head Coach Rick Insell, whose Blue Raider teams are also 115-4 at Murphy Center since his arrival in 2006. MT improved to 3-0 against teams from the ACC over the last two seasons.
Sophomores China Dow and Olivia Jones combined for 35 of the team's 53 points, while Jones recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Dow notched a career-high 18 points (11 in the second half) to go along with seven boards and two steals.
Edwards' last shot of the night was the most important.
Senior point guard Shanice Cason found a wide-open Edwards on the opposite right corner for the open trey with 22.5 seconds left to go and the Rockford, Ill., native hit the biggest shot of her young Blue Raider career.
Miami (1-1) had two chances to tie the contest, but MT forced a turnover on the ensuing possession before the Hurricanes failed to convert on an open attempt from the arc. Dow hit a pair of free throws from the charity strip to seal the victory.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 16-4 start in the first 8:27 of the contest thanks to efficient ball movement with five assists on its first five made goals. Junior MacKenzie Sells started the run on the first possession with a 3-pointer at the top of the key while Jones led the attack with eight points.
MT cooled off after that, scoring just 11 points in the final 11:33 minutes to go into the half with a 27-12 lead. However, the Blue Raiders didn't need much scoring as they put the clamps on a Hurricane offense that only shot 13 percent (3-of-23) in the opening frame, including a string of nine-straight missed field goals over six minutes.
Jones led the offense with 10 points and seven boards, while Dow chipped in with seven points on two field goals and three foul shots.
Miami came out in the second half looking to cut into the MT lead, putting together a 9-0 run to pull to within six, 27-21. Dow responded with her own 5-0 spurt on consecutive possessions to put the Blue Raider lead back to double-digits, 32-21.
The Hurricanes climbed all the way back to tie the game, 39-39, after outscoring the Blue Raiders 18-7 over a span of 6:36. Jones and Dow put the offense on their shoulders as the two teammates scored the next seven points to help MT regain the lead, 46-39.
But the Hurricanes wouldn't go away, going on the comeback trail to tie the contest again at 48-all, before Edwards' game-winning shot on the next possession.
The Blue Raiders will continue their slate of non-conference opponents from the power five conferences as they welcome the SEC's Arkansas Razorbacks on Thursday at 7 p.m., inside the Murphy Center.
