Early deficit dooms Blue Raiders
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee basketball team rallied from 15 down in the second half to a one-possession game, but was held off by visiting Arkansas, 58-51, in front of 4,120 at Murphy Center Thursday.
The loss snaps a 12-game win streak at home and it is just the fifth loss at home in the past decade under Head Coach Rick Insell.
Junior guard Caroline Warden spearheaded a bench that scored 29 points, pouring in a team-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field with four 3-pointers. Sophomore Olivia Jones recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and 13 boards.
Sophomore Ty Petty also contributed off the bench with six points, five rebounds and four assists. Petty was one of three players with four assists as the team assisted on 12 of the team's 16 made field goals.
Arkansas (3-0) was led by three players in double figures, including a game-high 19 points by Jhasmine Bowen, and 14 by Preseason All-SEC selection Jessica Jackson. The two combined to shoot 70 percent from the field (14-of-20).
Middle Tennessee hurt itself and shot just 12-of-24 from the free-throw line. The Blue Raiders shot 28.1 percent (16-of-57) for the game, including 25 percent (7-of-28) from 3-point range.
MT (1-2) struggled out of the gate with a 0-for-7 start as the Razorbacks jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first 5:18 of the contest. The Blue Raiders chipped away at the deficit to pull to within five, 15-10, after Petty found Warden for a trey to cap off an 8-3 run.
The Razorbacks then held the Blue Raiders without a field goal over the next six minutes pushing the lead back to double digits by as much as 30-13, and eventually headed into the locker room with a 32-20 advantage.
Petty led the team with six points and dished out three assists at intermission, while Jones grabbed six off the glass to pace MT.
It wasn't until the 13:47 mark of the second half that MT picked up some momentum with a 9-2 run while trailing the Razorbacks, 42-32.
Jones and Warden took charge during the run as the teammates scored all nine points with Warden draining a 3-pointer and scoring three points the old fashion way, while Jones' layup brought the Blue Raiders to within three, 44-41 with 9:14 remaining.
Arkansas kept MT from getting over the hump as the visitors stretched the lead to seven, 56-49, with just over a minute left in the game.
After Jones converted on a pair of free throws, MT got one more chance to cut it down to one possession, but senior Shanice Cason missed from the top of the key, leading to the Razorbacks' 58-51 victory.
The Blue Raiders will continue their non-conference gauntlet with a second straight SEC contest at Ole Miss Sunday. Insell will go up against his son, Matt, to mark the first time a father and son have faced off in a NCAA Division 1 women's basketball game. Tipoff is 3 p.m.
