OXFORD, Miss. – Middle Tennessee women's basketball will be part of NCAA Division I women's basketball history when it faces Ole Miss here at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The game represents the first time a father and son have coached against one another in NCAA Division I history. The Blue Raiders are led by legendary Head Coach Rick Insell. Ole Miss Head Coach Matt Insell is in his second season leading the Rebels.
The two coaches have twice been on opposing sides before when Matt Insell was an assistant coach at Kentucky. Middle Tennessee split those two meetings.
Ole Miss brings a 3-0 record into Sunday's game. The Rebels are led by Tia Faleru, who averages a double double with 23.7 points and 14.7 rebounds per game. She has 22 career double doubles. Ole Miss averages 91 points per game.
The Blue Raiders (1-2) continue their grueling slate of non-conference foes to start the season. Ole Miss is the second straight SEC foe after the Blue Raiders battled Arkansas Thursday. Middle Tennessee has faced Arizona State, Miami, Arkansas to open the season.
Sophomore Olivia Jones leads Middle Tennessee and averages a double double with 16.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. She has registered consecutive double doubles and was one rebound shy of a double double at Arizona State. China Dow averages 13 points and five rebounds.
Caroline Warden is coming off a 15-point effort against Arkansas. The 15 points were one shy of her career high.
In addition to the father-son matchup in Sunday's game, there are other ties between the teams. Middle Tennessee assistant Shalon Pillow was an assistant coach at Kentucky with Matt Insell. Ole Miss assistant Alex Simmons served as an assistant at Middle Tennessee for three years with Rick Insell, and Rebel Director of Operations Eric White previously served in the same capacity at Middle Tennessee with Rick Insell.
