Parker debuts with 25 as MT upends Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. – Age and experience won out over youth as Middle Tennessee turned back Ole Miss, 71-65, in front of 1,075 at Tad Smith Coliseum here Sunday.
Newcomer Cheyenne Parker led the Blue Raiders (2-2) with a double double in her Blue Raider debut. Parker was dominant with a game-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting and pulled 10 rebounds. Middle Tennessee had two players with double doubles and narrowly missed a third.
Olivia Jones registered her third consecutive double double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and added four steals. Ty Petty finished with 13 points and a career-high nine assists.
It marked the first time a father and son have met as head coaches in Division I women's basketball history. Ole Miss is led by second-year Head Coach Matt Insell. Blue Raider mentor Rick Insell won the historic head-to-head matchup that provided Middle Tennessee with its first win at Ole Miss in eight tries.
"I'm proud of my team," Rick Insell said. "This was a team win. I really didn't give much thought to the fact Matt was coaching the other team. Once the game started he was coaching his team, and I was coaching mine. It was a special day, though, because all my family and friends that were here. This was a good win for our team on the road against a good basketball team in Ole Miss."
Middle Tennessee fell behind 22-10 with 9:01 remaining in the first half but the Blue Raiders stormed back with a 15-0 run to take its first lead, 25-22, on Gabby Lyon's 3-pointer with 5:41 remaining in the frame. The Blue Raiders never trailed the remainder of the game; although it was a fight to the finish.
The Blue Raiders dealt Ole Miss (3-1) its first loss and the 71 points scored were the most against the Rebels on this early season.
Parker was suspended for the team's first three games but debuted in strong fashion. The senior forward led the charge and dominated the paint. Caroline Warden continued her strong play with nine points. Warden played all 40 minutes. China Dow also had a strong performance with seven points, six steals and three assists.
The Blue Raiders led 36-31 at the half and built as much as a 13-point lead, 49-36, following Parker's layup with 13:15 remaining. Middle Tennessee, which started two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior, showed great poise on the road, particularly when the Rebels put together a run.
Ole Miss cut the deficit to two, 51-49, with 9:29 remaining but Jones' 3-pointer with 6:47 remaining pushed the advantage back to seven, 58-51. Back came the Rebels and whittled the lead to three, 59-56, with 4:45 to play, but a Warden layup and Parker basket enabled the Raiders to go back up seven, 63-56, with 3:14 remaining.
Turnovers were a big part of the game. Middle Tennessee forced 24 Ole Miss miscues and scored 27 points off of those mistakes. Middle Tennessee's bench also came up huge, outscoring Ole Miss' reserves 32-15.
The Blue Raiders will be off until Dec. 3 when they play host to Clemson.
