Blue Raider secure 69-28 win in front of 11,307
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The second-largest crowd ever to watch a Middle Tennessee women's basketball game flocked to the Murphy Center for Education Day Wednesday.
They didn't leave disappointed.
Middle Tennessee (3-2) started strong and never let up on its way to a convincing 69-28 win against visiting Clemson (3-5) in front of 11,307 at Murphy Center. The Blue Raiders improved to 3-0 on Education Day.
MT dominated from start to finish in its largest margin of victory since a 44-point win over North Texas (86-42) on Jan. 8. Twelve of 13 players who saw action scored while sophomore Olivia Jones recorded her fourth straight double-double with 17 points and 12 boards.
Sophomore Ty Petty tied her season-high with 13 points on five buckets with three assists, and seniors Shanice Cason and Cheyenne Parker rounded out the leading scorers with eight and seven points, respectively.
The defense was more than effective as Clemson shot a season-low 23.4 percent (11-of-47) from the field and committed 23 turnovers. The Blue Raiders took advantage of the miscues with 34 points off of turnovers (27 in the first half).
Middle Tennessee's suffocating defense held Clemson to just 28 points, which is the lowest scoring output in its program history.
Through three games at home this season, the Blue Raiders are holding their opponents to 26.4 percent shooting from the floor.
MT also dominated inside with 28 points in the paint and outrebounding Clemson 52-26, including 23 offensive boards.
The Blue Raiders stormed out of the gate with an 11-2 advantage in the first 2:36 of the contest thanks to Parker sparking the run with seven of the points and a pair of layups by Jones and Porter.
Middle Tennessee kept its foot on the gas pedal throughout the opening stanza going up by as much as 34 heading into the locker room with a whopping 42-12 lead.
Ten different players scored for the Blue Raiders as they shot 50 percent from the field. Jones paced MT with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting while Petty and Parker each tallied seven points.
MT didn't let up the intensity in the second half on its way to a 67-23 lead for its largest lead of the game after sophomore Caya Williams hit three foul shots. Middle Tennessee kept the lead to more than 40 the rest of the way to cruise to the victory.
Williams finished with five points, followed by Abbey Sissom and Caroline Warden with four each.
Middle Tennessee will be looking to extend its win streak to three when Xavier visits the Murphy Center Sunday. Tipoff is 2 p.m.
