Jones' Career Day Pushes MT past Xavier
12/7/2014 4:33:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Sophomore Olivia Jones scored a career-high 32 points and the Middle Tennessee women's basketball team (4-2) showcased another dominant performance in its third straight win with a 90-68 victory over Xavier Sunday afternoon inside the Murphy Center.
The Blue Raiders (4-2) followed up their dominant showing on Tuesday against Clemson with a season-high 90 points and 54 percent shooting en route to the Blue Raiders' second straight victory by more than 20 points. It was the team's third straight win overall.
Jones put in an excellent performance on both ends of the court while shooting 12-for-19 from the field, and came close to a triple double with seven boards and a career-best eight steals. Sophomore China Dow came off the bench to score all 17 of her points in the first half to go along with five swipes and a whopping plus-43 in the plus/minus category. Her 17 points were just one shy of a career high.
Redshirt senior Cheyenne Parker poured in 14 points and grabbed seven boards while sophomore Ty Petty chipped in with 10 points to round out the leading scorers. Senior Shanice Cason added eight points and three assists.
The defense was up to its usual ways forcing Xavier (5-3) into a season-high 27 turnovers and capitalizing on those miscues with 40 points.
All Middle Tennessee needed was a 19-4 start in the first 6:37 of the opening half to run away from Xavier. Dow took charge as she scored seven straight points to cap off the run, and lead the Blue Raiders with 17 points off the bench going into the locker room.
MT never trailed during the contest while doubling up on the Musketeers, 46-23, and eventually head into the half with a 48-30 lead.
Dow connected on 7-of-8 shots from the field and Jones scored 12 points on four shots with five boards in the opening half. MT's 48 points was the highest scored in any half this season. The Blue Raiders shot 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the field in the sizzling opening half.
Much like the first stanza, the Blue Raiders stayed on top of the Musketeers throughout the second half while a layup by Jones with 3:54 left in the contest gave MT its largest lead of the day, 86-56.
Middle Tennessee outrebounded Xavier 32-28 with 14 offensive rebounds and scored 23 second chance points. The Blue Raiders were also aggressive getting to the line with 27 free throw attempts while making 20 from the charity stripe.
The schedule doesn't get any easier with a road affair Friday against No. 13 Kentucky. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
