Parker leads Raiders with double-double
LEXINGTON, Ky. – A three-minute drought midway through the first half proved detrimental as Middle Tennessee suffered a 78-62 setback against No. 8 Kentucky in front of 4,761 at Memorial Coliseum Friday night.
The game was tied 16-16 when Kentucky went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-16 advantage and stretched it to 41-26 at halftime.
The Blue Raiders (4-3) put up a strong fight in the second half but the damage was done. Kentucky (9-1) outscored Middle Tennessee 37-36 in the second half.
"There is no quit in our team," Blue Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "You can't instill in players an ability to fight. It is either in them or it isn't and our players showed that they have a lot of fight in them. They battled in the second half. I saw some good things in that second half and down the stretch. We just made too many turnovers (25) to beat a team like Kentucky."
Senior forward Cheyenne Parker had a strong all-around game with her second double-double in four games. Parker finished with a team-best 15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks and four steals in 26 minutes. She established career highs for rebounds, blocks and steals in the game. The double-double was Parker's second as a Blue Raider and the 48th of her collegiate career, including 46 at High Point.
Ty Petty scored a season-high 14 points and Olivia Jones rounded out three players in double figures with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Middle Tennessee was guilty of 25 turnovers but the Blue Raiders forced 28 Kentucky turnovers and scored 30 points off those miscues. The Blue Raider bench has been a strong suit in the early season but the Wildcats outscored Middle Tennessee 31-10 Friday. It was the lowest output for Blue Raider reserves this season.
The Blue Raiders shot just 32.4 percent in the first half (11-of-34) but heated up in the second stanza when they shot 45.5 percent (15-of-33). They shot 38.8 percent for the game.
Kentucky had three players in double figures, led by Jennifer O'Neill's game-high 22 points.
Middle Tennessee will face South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. Monday.
