Jones scores 22 in setback
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Middle Tennessee started strong and controlled the game most of the way but a late scoring drought and excessive foul trouble opened the door for South Dakota State and it came from behind to secure a 65-61 win in front of 1,026 at Frost Arena Monday.
The Blue Raiders (4-4) led for 32:18 of the contest but they couldn't hold off the Jackrabbits' rally in the final minutes.
Olivia Jones had another solid all-around game with 22 points, five rebounds and six steals. The workhorse played 40 minutes for the fourth time in eight games. Cheyenne Parker had another double-double, her second straight and third of the season, with 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots. The 12 rebounds tied a career high for Parker and the seven blocks established a new career high.
Shanice Cason and China Dow each scored eight for Middle Tennessee. Brea Edwards finished with five points and six rebounds.
"We just gave this game away," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We didn't continue to execute until the very end. I have not been disappointed in my team all season, but I am disappointed tonight."
South Dakota State (7-3) managed just five first-half field goals but the Jackrabbits stayed in the game by going 11-of-12 at the free-throw line. They finished the game 25-of-29 from the charity stripe and outscored the Blue Raiders 29-10 at the stripe.
Middle Tennessee had three players foul out. It was called for 24 fouls to South Dakota State's 15. The Blue Raiders had one of their better shooting games at the free-throw line, knocking down 80 percent (8-of-10) charity tosses but they couldn't get to the line as often as the Jackrabbits.
The Blue Raiders vaulted to a 20-9 lead in the game's first 10 minutes and maintained a double-digit lead for most of the first half and led 31-23 at the half.
Midway through the second half Middle Tennessee still maintained a nine-point lead, 48-39, but the Jackrabbits started chipping away down the stretch. They tied it 48-48 with 6:46 remaining and it was a one-possession game the remainder of the way. The Blue Raiders were 1-of-10 from the field during that stretch.
South Dakota State took its first lead, 55-53, on Mariah Clarin's layup with 4:58 remaining but Cason came back with a short jumper to get it tied, 55-55 with 4:45 remaining.
Macy Miller's long 3-pointer with 2:40 remaining gave the Jackrabbits the lead for good, 58-57, with 2:40 remaining.
Middle Tennessee had a chance to tie or win the game on its final possession but, trailing 63-61, the Blue Raiders turned the ball over with five seconds remaining.
The Blue Raiders return to action Saturday when they play host to Central Florida at 2 p.m.
