Four reach double figures in 79-57 win
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee played like a team happy to be home for the holidays against UCF Saturday.
The Blue Raider women's basketball team (5-4) got back to their winning ways as they dominated all facets of the game en route to a 79-57 victory in front of 3,925 inside the Murphy Center.
With the victory, MT is 4-1 at home this season and improves to 5-0 all-time vs. UCF (4-7). MT improved to 4-0 all-time against the Knights under Head Coach Rick Insell.
Four players scored in double figures for the Blue Raiders. Sophomore Olivia Jones and senior transfer Cheyenne Parker each finished with 21 points as the tandem shot a combined 50 percent from the field (14-28).
Jones also grabbed a team-high eight boards. She finished with a career-high four 3-pointers and shot 50 percent (4-of-8) from beyond the arc. Parker finished 7-of-11 from the field and went 7-for-12 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore guard China Dow finished with 12 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe, and junior transfer Brea Edwards rounded out the leading scorers with a career-high 11 points to go along with a career-best seven boards.
MT shot the three, and it shot it often with 30 attempts from outside the arc while making a season-high nine treys. Jones and Edwards spearheaded the shooting as each set career-high with four and three shots, respectively.
After shooting just 22 free throws combined in the past two games, the Blue Raiders made it a point to get to the line with 33 attempts while making 22 freebies.
With MT leading UCF 11-9, the duo of Jones and Parker combined for 15 points over a 5:31 span to give the Blue Raiders a 24-11 advantage in the first half. Middle Tennessee kept the foot on the gas pedal as it went up by as much as 21 (37-16) after freshman Abbey Sissom drilled a 3-pointer from the wing.
The Blue Raiders kept the Knights at bay despite UCF going on an 8-0 run to cut the MT lead to 37-24 going into the locker room.
Jones (14), Parker (11), and Edwards (9) shouldered the scoring load with 34 of the team's 37 points on 12-of-22 shooting from the field with six treys in the first half. The defense was just as impressive as the Knights shot only 36 percent from the field and went on scoring droughts of 5:31 and 3:07 during the contest.
UCF tried to get back into the game cutting the lead to 38-27, but MT flexed its muscle with a 12-4 run that pushed the lead to 50-31. From that point on, MT cruised to the victory on its way to ending 2014 at 13-1 inside the Glass House.
The Blue Raiders also did an excellent job sharing the ball, assisting on 18 of the team's 24 field goals while senior Shanice Cason paced the team with four assists.
MT held a 41-36 outrebounding edge and forced the Knights into 29 turnovers.
The Blue Raiders will have a week off before starting a four-game road trip at Tennessee Tech Dec., 28 for their final non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
