Shoots 58 percent in victory
COOKEVILLE – Middle Tennessee had its best shooting performance in its final non-conference tune-up of the season during a 98-76 triumph against rival Tennessee Tech in front of 1,291 here Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (6-4) shot a sizzling 58 percent (36-of-62) from the field, including 50 percent (11-of-22) from 3-point range, on its way to the highest-scoring output since Middle Tennessee put 104 on Louisiana Jan. 7, 2012.
Sophomore standout Olivia Jones continued her torrid start to the season. Jones led four Blue Raiders in double figures with 30 points and also pulled a game-high 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
Senior Cheyenne Parker poured in 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. Parker also dished a career-best six assists and pulled four rebounds. Sophomore Ty Petty also was solid with 18 points and six assists. Another stellar sophomore, China Dow, also supplied double figures with 12, and TiAnna Porter posted a career-high with seven points.
The Blue Raiders won their 10th straight game in the series to take a 39-38 overall lead.
Middle Tennessee enjoyed an astronomical shooting night but the greatest damage was done in the second half. Leading 40-32 at intermission, the Blue Raiders busted out of the second half as a team on a mission.
The Blue Raiders shot a blistering 74 percent (23-of-31) in the final 20 minutes, including a sweltering 67 percent (8-of-12) from 3-point range. During one stretch they scored on seven straight possessions as they meticulously pulled away from the Golden Eagles (3-10).
Jones and Petty combined for eight of the 11 treys with Jones knocking down a career-best five 3-pointers. The 11 treys are a season high and Middle Tennessee has connected for seven or more 3-pointers in seven of its first 10 games.
The Blue Raiders also demonstrated an unselfish approach and shared the basketball as evidenced by a season-high 24 assists on the team's 36 field goals. In addition to Petty and Parker's six assists, junior guard Caroline Warden added five helpers. The Blue Raiders dominated in the paint and scored more than half (50) of their points there. Middle Tennessee also scored 22 points off of turnovers.
Parker scored 20 of her 24 in the second half and helped dominate the paint.
Middle Tennessee quickly pushed its eight-point halftime lead to double digits when Jones knocked down a 3-pointer to open the second half. The Blue Raiders continued to shoot well and built the lead to 15, 59-44, with 12:57 remaining after hitting 7-of-10 shots to start the second half.
Tennessee Tech would not get closer than 12 the remainder of the way as the Blue Raiders never cooled from the field and used good ball movement to get high percentage shots.
Brea Edwards (5) and Caroline Warden (2) also got into the scoring act for Middle Tennessee.
