Jones, Parker produce double-doubles
BIRMINGHAM – Olivia Jones and Cheyenne Parker each produced a double-double and Middle Tennessee secured its 800th all-time win by turning back UAB, 76-68, in the C-USA opener for both teams.
Middle Tennessee (7-4, 1-0) became just the 31st NCAA Division I women's basketball program with 800 all-time victories and extended its January winning streak to 24 games under Head Coach Rick Insell.
Jones registered her sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore sensation also tied her career high for assists with five and was once again a workhorse as she played all 40 minutes for the fifth time.
Parker was also a force with her fourth double-double. The senior forward finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots. Junior Brea Edwards also reached double figures with a career-high 14 points. Edwards shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range.
Sophomore Ty Petty had another stellar all-around game with eight points and five assists but her greatest attribute was defense as she made it difficult for the Blazer guards throughout the game.
With Parker and Jones leading the charge, Middle Tennessee was dominant in the paint where it outscored the Blazers (6-6, 0-1) 34-18. The Blue Raiders also made the most of their second-shot opportunities, outscoring UAB 15-3 in that category. Parker had six offensive rebounds for the Blue Raiders.
As anticipated the conference opener was a tough contest from start to finish and Middle Tennessee secured the crucial league road win with a determined effort.
The Blue Raiders led 36-35 at halftime as UAB's first-half shooting was on the mark. The Blazers shot 54 percent (13-of-24) from the field in the first half, including an uncanny 7-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Middle Tennessee started the second half on a 12-3 run to open up its biggest lead of the game, 48-38, with 15:10 remaining. Edwards scored eight of her 14 points during the run, including two clutch 3-pointers, and Parker added the other four points in the paint as the Blue Raiders took control of the contest.
The Blazers trimmed the deficit to four, 62-58, with 3:54 remaining, but Jones scored seven of the team's next eight points to stave the upset bid. In fact, one of the biggest shots of the game was Jones' final 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining.
UAB had pulled to within six, 67-61, but Jones delivered her fourth 3-pointer of the game to push the advantage back to nine with 1:24 to play.
Shanice Cason (4), Gabby Lyon (2), China Dow (2) and TiAnna Porter (2) also got into the scoring column for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it faces FIU in Miami Thursday.
