MT notched fourth straight win
MIAMI – Winning on the road is always a difficult proposition but Middle Tennessee continued its road mastery and January dominance in a 75-60 win against FIU here Thursday.
The Blue Raiders (8-4, 2-0) won their 25th straight game in the month of January and improved to 66-12 on the road against conference foes under Head Coach Rick Insell.
This one was not as easy as the final score may indicate.
Middle Tennessee led 55-53 with less than 12 minutes remaining but outscored the Golden Panthers (3-10, 0-2) 20-7 down the stretch to secure the victory and win its season-high fourth straight game. Three of the four wins during the streak have come on the road.
"Coach (Insell) told us it would be tough and it was," said sophomore standout Olivia Jones. "We had to work hard to earn this win. It's never easy on the road. We had a lot of people step up and contribute to this win.'
Jones has proven herself to be one of the best all-around players in C-USA and she proved her mettle once again against FIU. Jones poured in a game-high 27 points, pulled nine rebounds and collected six steals. Jones came into the game ranked 16th nationally in that category.
Four Blue Raiders reached double figures. In addition to Jones' 27, Cheyenne Parker delivered her fifth double-double in nine games with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Parker's play down the stretch was instrumental in victory.
Ty Petty continued her exceptional breakout season with 11 points and seven assists with just two turnovers. She had entered the game tied for second in C-USA in helpers. Brea Edwards also continued her improved play with 10 points and six rebounds.
China Dow contributed six points and three assists, and senior captain Shanice Cason finished with three assists, no turnovers and three steals to help key the victory.
"I'm proud of our team," Insell said. "Any time you get a road win it's good. We didn't always look good doing it but we played hard and earned this tough road win. Now we have to stay focused and get ready for Florida Atlantic. It will be another tough road test for us (Saturday)."
Middle Tennessee continued to rack up assists. The Blue Raiders assisted more than half of their field goals with 16 helpers on 30 makes. The Blue Raiders also collected 15 steals, led by Jones with six and Cason with three. Petty's seven assists led that category, while Cason and Dow had three each.
Middle Tennessee forced 29 turnovers and converted those FIU miscues into 25 points. In fact, the Blue Raiders had a season-low seven turnovers and outscored the Golden Panthers 25-4 in points off turnovers.
The Blue Raiders also battled on the boards with a total of 37 but 20 of those were offensive caroms. The Blue Raiders outscored FIU 17-6 on second-chance points. Parker had seven offensive rebounds and Edwards added five. Middle Tennessee continued to play well inside, too, outscoring FIU 46-26 in the paint.
Middle Tennessee led 45-37 at the half and pushed the advantage to 55-41 less than three minutes into the second half; however, FIU came storming back. Parker's tip-in provided the 14-point cushion but she picked up her fourth foul seconds later and FIU went to work inside.
The Golden Panthers used a 12-0 run to pull to within 55-53 with 12:16 remaining. Insell rolled the dice and inserted Parker back into the game with 10:29 remaining. She proved to be a difference with hustle plays, rebounding and offense as the Blue Raiders started to reassert themselves and pull away down the stretch.
Middle Tennessee used a 16-6 run over an eight-minute stretch to shift the momentum. Four Blue Raiders took charges. They were Cason, Petty, Dow and TiAnna Porter.
