Raiders roll to fifth straight win, 101-69
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Middle Tennessee survived its longest road stretch of the season and capped it with the most points scored in three years in an 101-69 triumph against Florida Atlantic.
Five players reached double figures as the Blue Raiders (9-4, 3-0) won their fifth straight overall and 26th straight in the month of January to maintain a share of the C-USA lead, while dealing FAU (8-6, 2-1) its first league setback.
The 101 points were the most scored for Middle Tennessee since they scored 104 against Louisiana Jan. 7. 2012, and the most scored on the Owls at home since 2002.
Olivia Jones led the Blue Raiders with 27 points and added seven rebounds.
Senior forward Cheyenne Parker had her best all-around game as a Blue Raider and dominated the paint and the boards with 26 points on 13-of-21 shooting, and 18 rebounds (both career highs). Parker entered the game 16th nationally in offensive rebounds and pulled 10 against the Owls. She also had three blocked shots.
China Dow was also exceptional. Dow came off of the bench to score 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting. She had three assists, no turnovers and took three charges. Ty Petty put together another impressive outing with 13 points, four assists and four steals.
Brea Edwards rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points. Shanice Cason just missed double figures and finished with nine points but she was a distributor with seven assists, no turnovers and three steals.
"This was a big road win for our team," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "I am proud of our team and the way they have handled their business during this stretch of road games. I really thought China Dow was the difference in this game. It was close through the first 10 minutes but she came in and brought some energy and really disrupted them."
It wasn't as easy as the outcome may indicate early when FAU vaulted to 11-6 advantage in the first four minutes. FAU led 17-14 with 13:18 remaining, but Middle Tennessee stiffened on defense and never relented on offense. The Blue Raiders used a 14-2 run to slowly pull away and build a 53-31 by halftime.
The Blue Raiders shot 50 percent (37-of-74) from the field, including a season-high 48 percent (12-of-24) from 3-point range. The 12 treys also are a season high.
Middle Tennessee will look to maintain a share of the C-USA lead when it returns home to face Southern Miss Thursday. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
