MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's basketball team (9-5, 3-1 C-USA) had a chance to win in at the end in overtime, but fell short to Southern Miss 77-75 Thursday evening inside the Murphy Center.
After sophomore Ty Petty rebounded a missed USM free throw, the guard dribbled down the court to find junior Carolina Warden for a clean look from outside the arc but her potential game-winner just missed as the Blue Raiders suffered the setback.
The loss snaps a five-game win streak overall and an 11-game win streak during Conference USA play in the regular season. It's just the fourth loss in 80 conference games at home under head coach Rick Insell.
Sophomore Ty Petty tied her career-high with 20 points to pace MT while freshman Abbey Sissom provided a huge spark off the bench with a career-high 17 points (12 in the second half) on a career-best five 3-pointers. Sophomore Olivia Jones notched her 11th career double-double and seventh of the season with 19 points and 12 boards. Senior Shanice Cason had another solid game with seven assists and just one turnover in 30 minutes. Cason also had two steals. She has 17 assists and one turnover in the last two games
Redshirt senior Cheyenne Parker chipped in with eight points and 10 boards for her third-straight game with at least 10 off the glass.
It looked like the Blue Raiders were well on their way to another big victory but relinquished a 19-point lead thanks to hot shooting by USM (10-5, 3-1). After MT built a 54-35 lead with 12:22 remaining, the Golden Eagles shot 72.2 percent (13-for-18) from the field to outscore MT 42-21 the rest of the way while holding the Blue Raiders to 7-of-22 shooting down the stretch.
MT was facing a 68-66 deficit with time running down in regulation but Jones drove the baseline and converted a layup with two seconds remaining to force overtime. On the opening possession in OT, the hometown native drained a trey to give the Blue Raiders a 71-68 lead. However, the Golden Eagles hit all three of their shots attempts in overtime before the attempted game-winning shot
Senior Tamara Jones for USM did most of the damage for the Golden Eagles pouring in 35 points on 12-for-18 shooting. Teammate Jerontay Clemons was the lone other player for USM with 21 points on seven field goals.
After erupting for 101 points at Florida Atlantic Saturday, the Blue Raiders struggled out of the gate against the upset-minded Golden Eagles and did not score their first points until the 16:21 mark off a Petty 3-pointer.
With MT trailing 8-5, the Blue Raiders responded with a 6-0 run thanks to four points by Dow and a layup by Jones. USM stayed right with MT until a 4-0 spurt on consecutive layups by Jones and Sissom gave the Blue Raiders a 29-25 lead going into the locker room.
Petty shouldered the load on the offense with 14 points while Dow and Sissom came off the bench to combine for 11 points. Despite shooting just 36.7 percent from the field, MT held a 16-10 advantage in the paint and outscored USM 7-2 in second-chance points.
The Blue Raider offense came out on fire hitting a barrage of 3-pointers connecting on 6-of-8 six to start the second stanza. Sissom spearheaded a 12-0 run over a span of 5:22 with a pair of treys to stretch the lead to 19, 54-35, before the USM comeback.
MT will look to bounce back quickly Saturday against Louisiana Tech, who defeated UAB tonight to improve to 3-1 in league action. The Blue Raiders are 3-1 coming off a loss this season and 44-20 under Insell. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Glass House.
