MT plays host to Southern Miss Thursday
MURFREESBORO - Middle Tennessee returns to Murphy Center for the first time in nearly a month when it plays host to Southern Miss in a pivotal C-USA game Thursday at 7 p.m.
When the Blue Raiders (9-4, 3-0) step on the court for tipoff against the Golden Eagles it will mark the first time in 25 days for them to play in front of the home crowd. The game is a rematch of last season's C-USA Tournament championship game, won by Middle Tennessee, 84-55.
Middle Tennessee brings a five-game winning streak into the Southern Miss game and is tied for the C-USA lead. The Blue Raiders have also won 26 straight games in the month of January and bring a 10-game home conference win streak into the contest.
Middle Tennessee is 117-15 at Murphy Center under Head Coach Rick Insell, including a remarkable 76-3 clip against conference foes.
Several standouts have paced Middle Tennessee's strong play of late, including senior Cheyenne Parker and sophomores Olivia Jones and Ty Petty. Parker and Jones are ranked in the Top 100 of six categories in the NCAA ratings. They are also ranked amongst the top three in several C-USA statistics.
On the national scene, Jones is 12th in steals (3.2), 18th in scoring (20.8), 42nd in double-doubles (6), 50th in 3-point field goals per game (2.5), 61st in 3-point field goal percentage (39.3) and 72nd in rebounding. She leads C-USA in scoring, double-doubles and 3-point field goals made.
Parker has also made a splash. She is sixth nationally in offensive rebounds per game (5.0), 12th in field goal percentage (57.3), 22nd in blocked shots (2.7), 42nd in double-doubles (6), 60th in scoring (18.0) and 73rd in rebounding (9.3). Parker leads C-USA in offensive rebounds, blocked shots and is tied for the league lead in double-doubles.
Petty has also been solid. She ranks 68th nationally in assists with 4.6 per game and is second in C-USA in that category.
The Blue Raiders have played particularly well during their current win streak. They are averaging 85.8 points per game during that span, which is 12.5 higher than their season average of 73.3, and they are outscoring opponents by 19.8 points per game.
Four players are averaging double figures during the streak, led by Jones' 25.6 points per outing. Parker is averaging 20.8 points during the streak, followed by Petty (11.2) and Edwards (10.0). China Dow is right on the verge with 9.2 points per outing.
Southern Miss has won three of its last four coming into the Middle Tennessee game and the Golden Eagles went overtime to earn wins at Louisiana Tech and at home against UTSA. They are coming off a 71-59 loss against UTEP.
