Blue Raiders have won 23 straight Jan. games
BIRMINGHAM – The start of a new year has been welcomed by the Middle Tennessee women's basketball team in recent years.
When the calendar turns to January the Blue Raiders' focus on the task at hand has been remarkable. In fact, Middle Tennessee has been almost unbeatable under Head Coach Rick Insell during the first month of the year.
Middle Tennessee has won 23 straight games in the month of January entering the C-USA opener at UAB Sunday at 2 p.m. The Blue Raiders have not lost a January contest since Jan. 29, 2011 at FIU and they have won 92 percent (71-6) of their January games under Insell.
The Blue Raiders (6-4) hope to continue the trend when the open defense of their 2014 C-USA title against the Blazers (6-5) at Bartow Arena. Middle Tennessee was the preseason pick of league coaches to repeat as league champions despite losing six seniors from last year's title team. UAB was picked eighth in the preseason poll.
Middle Tennessee is 8-1 in league openers under Insell.
With a win, Middle Tennessee would become the 31st NCAA Division I program with 800 all-time wins but winning at Bartow Arena will not be easy.
UAB is 4-1 at home this season and its only setback was an overtime affair.
Sophomore Olivia Jones leads Middle Tennessee and has emerged as one of the top players in C-USA. Jones was named C-USA Player of the Week for the second time last week. She ranks in the top three of five statistical categories in the league. Jones leads C-USA in scoring with 19.4 per game and is fourth in rebounding with 9.5 per contest.
Jones has not been a one-person wrecking crew. Senior Cheyenne Parker has been a force in the paint and averages 17.3 points and 7.7 rebounds, while sophomore China Dow is averaging 10.1 points per outing.
Sophomore Ty Petty has also been a strong cog in the team's success at the point guard position. Petty averages 8.6 points and is fourth in C-USA in assists with 4.4 per game.
UAB is led by Janae Smith with 17.8 points and 7.1 rebounds, while Chelsee Black averages 12.5 points.
The Blue Raiders open C-USA play with three straight road games.
