Blue Raiders face South Dakota State Monday
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Two tradition-rich women's basketball programs will be looking to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this season when Middle Tennessee and South Dakota State collide at Frost Arena Monday. Tipoff is 7 PM.
Middle Tennessee (4-3) had its three-game winning streak end at No. 8 Kentucky Friday. South Dakota State (6-3) had its five-game winning streak snapped in an overtime loss against Green Bay last week.
The Blue Raiders have not suffered back-to-back losses since November of 2013 when it dropped consecutive contests at Arkansas and at Kentucky. Consecutive losses under MT Head Coach Rick Insell are rare. The Blue Raiders are 43-19 following a loss under Insell, including a 2-0 mark this season.
Sophomore Olivia Jones leads the Blue Raiders with a double-double. Jones is averaging 17.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per outing, and senior forward Cheyenne Parker appears to be adjusting to MT's system.
Parker is coming off a double-double performance at Kentucky. The 6-foot-4 forward led the Blue Raiders with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She established MT career highs for rebounds (12), steals (4) and blocked shots (6) in the game. The six blocks are the most for a Blue Raider in Insell's nine-plus seasons.
South Dakota State is a member of the Summitt Conference and it is an annual contender for the league title. The Jackrabbits and Blue Raiders have split the eight meetings between the two teams. MT is 4-3 against South Dakota State under Insell.
The game also serves as one of the last tune-ups before Conference USA play begins in January. The Blue Raiders have three non-conference games remaining, including the South Dakota State contest.
MT certainly has been tested in the preconference slate. The Blue Raiders are fifth nationally in RPI and 13th for strength of schedule.
