Blue Raider fall to Cincinnati
NICEVILLE, Fla. – Middle Tennessee (3-2) fell 69-51 to Cincinnati in its first game in Niceville, Florida as the Blue Raiders continued play in the Emerald Coast Classic.
Darnell Harris posted his best night as a Blue Raider as he returned to the court he used to call home at Northwest Florida State College. He ended the night going 5-of-7 from three-point range for a career-high 15 points while adding a steal. Harris was going head-to-head against former NWFSC teammate Farad Cobb who now plays for the Bearcats.
UC opened with a 12-0 run as the Blue Raiders scored their first point off a Joshua Phillips free-throw at the 11:42 mark in the first half.
The Blue Raiders started finding a rhythm as Jaqawn Raymond drained a three, followed by a dunk by Jacquez Rozier as they brought the score within eight points before the under eight media timeout.
UC returned with a 6-0 run to eventually extend the lead to 39-17 at the half.
Fourteen of the Blue Raiders 17 points in the first half came from the bench as Harris led the team with six points, going 2-for-2 from three-point range.
"We missed a lot of opportunities early and I thought at that time we quit defending like we needed to," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "The second half there were parts that I was proud of. I was proud of Darnell that he got to come back and play well here by shooting the ball well."
Middle Tennessee found its shot in the second half shooting 33 percent better in the half but completed the game 17-for-49 at 34.7 percent as Cincinnati shot a staggering 56.8 percent from the field while going 7-of-15 from behind the arc to hold off the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee's bench finished the game with 38 total points.
Ten Cincinati players got on the board tonight as Troy Caupain led the way with 11 points and Jermaine Sanders followed with 10 points.
Rozier collected his second-consecutive 10 point performance and third double-digit scoring outing of the season. Rozier led the team in rebounding against the Bearcats with four on the night as UC outrebounded the Blue Raiders 34-21.
The Blue Raiders will take on the loser of Ole Miss and Creighton on Saturday at 5 p.m. to close the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Fla.
