MT drops road game at Belmont
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee (3-4) dropped a close battle with in-state foe Belmont 63-59 to open its four-game road swing on Tuesday night.
The Blue Raiders started DJ Jones, Giddy Potts, Jaqawn Raymond, Jacquez Rozier and Reggie Upshaw for the team's fifth different starting line-up in its first seven games. Potts, a freshman, picked up his first career start.
The Bruins used a couple of short runs to take a 36-26 lead heading into the locker room despite the Blue Raiders out-rebounding Belmont 19-13 with Rozier, Raymond and Potts pulling down three first-half boards a piece.
The Blue Raiders kept a fast rotation of players with 12 players getting minutes in the first half and 11 of MT's 26 points coming from the bench including Marcus Tarrance with 7 points to lead the team at halftime.
Raymond opened the second half with his third three-pointer of the night to bring the Blue Raiders within seven points.
The Blue Raiders went on a four-minute scoring drought where they were 0-of-5 from the field early in the second half that finally ended as Upshaw got the tip-in on a rebound.
MT recovered as the team forced Belmont to make a couple turnovers followed by three-point baskets by Jones and Tarrance to bring the Blue Raiders back within seven points with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Raymond would sink his fourth three-pointer of the night to bring MT within four points and force Belmont to take a timeout to mark a 15-3 run by the Blue Raiders in a span of a little over four minutes.
The game would come down to the wire as MT brought it to a one-point game several times but were unable to take the lead.
MT shot 43.5 percent from three-point range making 10 from behind the arc on the night led by Raymond's four treys. Tarrance led the team in scoring with 14 points going 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range.
The Blue Raiders beat the Bruins in the battle of the boards with 43 rebounds to their 30 with 14 points off second chance opportunities.
For the second time this season four Blue Raiders would have a double-digit outing in the game as Tarrance (14), Raymond (12), Jones (11) and Upshaw (11) would see double figures.
